AFL-CIO
The AFL-CIO is a democratically governed federation of 55 unions, each with its own distinct membership and unique voice. AFL-CIO members have come together to build and support the rights of working people and fight to vanquish social and economic injustice. The 55 unions that make up the AFL-CIO include more than 12.5 million working people.
Founded in 1893, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees represents workers in the entertainment industry. Members work in all forms of live theater, motion picture and television production, trade shows and exhibitions, television broadcasting, and concerts as well as the equipment and construction shops that support all these areas of the entertainment industry. They represent virtually all behind the scenes workers necessary to the functioning of the entertainment industry. Within the U.S. and Canada, there are more than 375 IATSE local unions.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers represents approximately 750,000 active members and retirees who work in a wide variety of fields, including utilities, construction, telecommunications, broadcasting, manufacturing, railroads and government. The IBEW has members in both the United States and Canada and stands out among the American unions in the AFL-CIO because it is among the largest and has members in so many skilled occupations.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union has approximately 42,000 members in over 60 local unions in the states of California, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Hawaii. An additional 3,500 members belong to the Inlandboatmen’s Union of the Pacific, which constitutes the Union’s Marine Division. Another 14,000 members belong to the autonomous ILWU Canadian Area.
The International Union of Operating Engineers is a progressive, diversified trade union that primarily represents operating engineers, who work as heavy equipment operators, mechanics, and surveyors in the construction industry, and stationary engineers, who work in operations and maintenance in building and industrial complexes, and in the service industries. IUOE also represents nurses and other health industry workers, a significant number of public employees engaged in a wide variety of occupations, as well as a number of job classifications in the petrochemical industry. IUOE today has approximately 400,000 members in 123 local unions throughout the United States and Canada.
The Service Employees International Union is an organization of over two million members, united by the belief in the dignity and worth of workers and the services they provide, dedicated to improving the lives of workers and their families and creating a more just and humane society. SEIU Healthcare, is the largest healthcare union in North America with more than 1.1 million members. Approximately 386,000 SEIU property services workers nationwide clean, maintain, and provide security for commercial office buildings, co-ops, and apartment buildings, as well as public facilities like theaters, stadiums, and airports. And SEIU is the second largest union of public service employees with more than one million local and state government workers, public school employees, bus drivers, and child care providers – including 80,000 early learning and child care professionals.
wORKERS UNITED
Workers United is an American and Canadian Union with over 100 years of history. Their beginnings were instrumental for the development of the Labor Movement in the 20th Century. They are the Union of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, the 1910 Chicago Strike, Sidney Hillman and Amalgamated Bank. They are the sons and daughters of ACTWU, ILG, and UNITE!, and now along with SEIU will once again pave the road for the creation of a strong and educated working class.
INDEPENDENTS
